Advocacy in Action for School Social Workers

Oct 22, 2025 | Learning Opportunities

This workshop will empower school social workers to become more effective advocates across the different levels of advocacy—from individual student needs to broader systemic change within the school and community. The session will cover approaches and considerations for advocacy, including how to select the most effective strategy for a given situation. We’ll also provide case examples to illustrate successful advocacy efforts and the key steps involved in each. The goal is to equip attendees with the skills to collaborate with parents, teachers, and administrators to secure needed resources and accommodations, and to advocate for policies that promote school social work and student success. We will also explore the current state of school behavioral health advocacy in South Carolina.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Participants will be able to differentiate between micro, mezzo, and macro-level advocacy in the school context.
  • Participants will be able to develop a strategic plan for advocating on behalf of a student’s specific academic or social-emotional need.
  • Participants will be able to identify and utilize key collaborators within the school system to effect positive change.
