Steenrod Elementary’s Worry Monsters Combat Anxiety

May 12, 2025 | News

During lunch bunch groups, 38 students in grades 1-5 at Steenrod Elementary used the Camp Cope-A-Lot curriculum to create FEAR plans and made worry monsters to align with their FEAR plans. FEAR stands for:

  • Feeling Frightened
  • Expecting bad things to happen
  • Attitudes and Actions
  • Results and Rewards

This activity helped the children recognize signs of anxiety, avoid thought traps, and use coping skills when they are feeling anxious. One student shared that she used her FEAR plan when she was feeling nervous about doing a back handspring in gymnastics. She said that she now feels more confident and can use her FEAR plan when she’s feeling nervous in other situations such as at the doctor’s office.
