Students at Brooke Middle Learn to Be the Sunshine

During Mental Health Awareness Month, Brooke Middle School Lunch Buddies groups participated in meaningful discussions based on lessons from the Ripple Effects evidence-based program. Students explored healthy coping skills using mindfulness to manage anxiety, and choosing positive thought versus negativity. Each weekly discussion was reinforced with a hands-on activity designed to help students apply these concepts in an impactful way.

Activities included a brief meditative nature walk centered around the 5-4-3-2-1 Method and a bubble blowing activity. The students identified areas in their lives that caused them stress, frustration or anxiety. The students then blew bubbles and watched their anxious thoughts float way. Our final session concluded with painting sun catchers to symbolize the message “If You Can’t Find the Sun, Be the Sunshine.” These lessons and activities promoted self-awareness, resilience, and positive mental wellness strategies.

Reflecting on the experience, ESMH Coordinator Ashley Flaherty of Youth Services System stated, “It was incredibly meaningful to spend time with the students of Brooke Middle School throughout Mental Health Awareness Month. Watching them engage in thoughtful conversations, support one another, and practice new coping skills was truly rewarding. I especially appreciated being able to provide them with hands-on projects to take home, giving them a lasting reminder to carry those positive messages with them throughout the summer.”
