Students at Brooke Middle School Give Themselves Flowers

May 18, 2026 | News

Inspired by Miley Cyrus’s song Flowers, Brooke Middle School students created their own bouquets to give themselves flowers as a symbol of self-love, independence, and personal worth.

I can buy myself flowers
Write my name in the sand
Talk to myself for hours
Say things you don’t understand
I can take myself dancing
And I can hold my own hand
Yeah, I can love me better than you can

Ashley Flaherty, ESMH Coordinator at Brooke Middle School facilitated a lesson focused on Healthy Relationships and utilized the Ripple Effects, which is an approved evidence-based program for WVESMH initiatives. This activity opened the door to meaningful conversations about recognizing toxic relationships and making healthy choices. Miss Ashley emphasized that students do not have to stay in situations that harm their physical and emotional well-being. The message was simple but powerful: yes, you really can buy yourself flowers—and choose to value and care for yourself first.
