Treating Eating Disorders: What Psychotherapists Need to Know About Medical and Nutritional Complications – May10

Apr 24, 2024 | Learning Opportunities

Disordered eating behaviors can lead to significant morbidity and mortality, and outpatient providers must recognize signs and symptoms that warrant inpatient hospitalization for medical stabilization. This presentation will discuss the criteria for hospitalization and provide an overview of potential medical and nutritional complications that patients may experience. We will describe how a patient is evaluated and managed while hospitalized to allow outpatient providers to understand what their clients/patients can expect before referring them to an emergency department or what their clients/patients have undergone if establishing outpatient care after hospitalization. We will also briefly highlight communication strategies between inpatient and outpatient providers to improve transitions between levels of care.
