During the month of June,Youth Services System, Inc. provided “Hey U.G.L.Y.”  summer camps for three local schools including two middle schools and one elementary.  YSS gave students the opportunity to participate in the free week-long program designed to foster connection, social confidence, and community. Hey U.G.L.Y is an acronym for Unique, Gifted, Lovable, You, meant to promote using positive terms to describe others and ways to uplift one another.

The children at our camps participated in recreational activities like swimming, rock climbing, gardening, touring local candy stores and bakeries, visiting the zoo, and zip-lining. Throughout the week, campers participated in physical activities, conversation, and lessons to support mental health and personal well-being. Special guests included representatives from the National Alliance on Mental Illness, who led interactive sessions on drug prevention, emotional wellness, and life skills. The WVU Ohio County Extension educated the campers about the importance of healthy eating. In addition, the Wheeling Police Department K9 Unit and drone operator provided demonstrations.

By combining these physical adventures with emotional education, students develop skills that build resilience, strengthen peer relationships, and encourage healthy habits. The week served as an important reminder of how community support, education, and fun can come together to shape a brighter future for our youth. The camps are a memorable experience for all involved. All campers received a “Hey U.G.L.Y.”  t-shirt and lanyard at the end of the week.
