Handle with Care

Community Spotlight: WV Handle with Care

Dec 12, 2022 | Learning Opportunities

The Inspiring Dreams Network is hosting a community spotlight with Handle with Care (HWC). HWC is an innovative best practice for helping reduce the negative effects experienced by children’s exposure to trauma related to police presence in the home or violence in the community. HWC is a community systems, cooperative initiative between schools/child care agencies, law enforcement and treatment providers. Handle with Care provides the school or child care agency with a “heads up” when a child has been identified by law enforcement as being at the scene of a traumatic event. School staff are trained how to appropriately respond with interventions to help reduce the impact of the trauma and to avoid re-traumatizing the child. The HWC approach uses mental health providers located at the school to provide needed services. HWC promote safe and supportive homes, schools, and communities that protect children and help traumatized children heal and thrive. This community spotlight will give an overview of how the program works and give participants an opportunity to ask questions about how HWC is working in your community and who to contact for more information. A more intensive workshop to dig into the nuts and bolts of HWC is being planned for a later date.
